This wall in a ditch is a ha-ha, a method of walling without ruining the expanse of parkland.

The ruined cottage in the woods above Beetham.

Wood Garlic adorns the path edges as you pass the ruined cottage.

The path through the woods above Whin Scar built to provide safe passage for the dead of Arnside, as this is one of Lakeland's many Coffin Routes.

Not quite so safe passage as the path terminates at the cliffs of Whin Scar. The coffins had to be manhandled up the cliff face.

This cleft in the cliff face is the much visited Fairy Steps.

On a clear day the top of Whin Scar provides outstanding views to the west, it's a great place to stop for a brew, not so today.

The pool at Haverbrack.
