A late start today so it's an afternoon walk and hope to get back before dark, a short drive to Holme to make the ascent of Hutton Roof Crags, later to return along the Lancaster Canal. I've looked at Hutton Roof Crags several times but always opted to go elsewhere (my loss), what looks like a insignificant limestone mound on the map turned out to have some of the best views for miles around, next time I'm up there I'll make sure I have time to explore.
We left the car at the northern edge of Holme village to make our way onto the A6070, south to reach Holme Park Farm where the long ascent to Hutton Roof Crags begun, between dry stone walls at first then above the giant scar of Holme Park Quarry before crossing lush green fields to reach the fell road. There's no path marked on the map to the summit of Hutton Roof Crags, luckily a clear path rises from the fell road, climbing through Gorse and Juniper skirting various limestone outcrops before the summit plateau was reached, the trig point gifted us with fantastic views totally unexpected. From the trig point we descended west through woodland to reach Slape Lane. The first footpath on the right took us to the small village of Clawthorpe, we entered Piper's Lane to be followed by a short walk through parkland, on reaching Burton Road we headed west into the village to follow the line of the canal back to the car.
