The plan for today was to head to Newlands Hause, in time to photograph the riders competing in the Fred Whitton Challenge, a grueling 112 mile cycle sportive taking in six of the major Lakeland passes on route, rather them than me, unfortunately when I reached Newlands Hause it seamed I'd only brought my wide-angled lens, not appropriate for capturing the pain and agony as they grind their way to the top of the pass, I'd have hated to get too close and knock one off, my day would probably have ended there and then. So from Buttermere I would head for Whiteless Pike and Grasmoor to later capture the beauty of Rannerdale with the Bluebells in bloom, as it turned out the weather gods had other ideas, so with thunder already rumbling in the hills I rather foolishly set off.

My day started in this fine oak wood next to the tumbling cascades of Mill Beck.

Walkers at the end of the Low Bank Ridge with High Crag, High Stile and Red Pike adding to the beauty of Buttermere.

Nearing the summit of Whiteless Pike, Robinson over Newlands Hause.

How's this for a view, the Buttermere Valley with Rannerdale Knotts taking centre stage.

Views down Gasgale Gill from the ascent of Sand Hill.

Eel Crag across the summit of Sand Hill, the thunder's getting considerably louder now, I'm beginning to think the Gasgale Gill descent would have been a safer option.

In my opinion this mile ridge from Hopegill Head to Whiteside along the edge of the Gasgalele Crags is the best ridge walk in the whole of Lakeland.

Fallbarrow as seen from Whin Ben.

The twin tops of Mellbreak seen across Crummock Water.

Walking into Rannerdale with views across Crummock Water.

I was just about to put the camera on the tripod, some fancy photography was called for to do the the Bluebells justice, without warning one deafening crack of thunder followed instantly by torrential rain sent everybody running for cover, including me.

After the storm, looking to Fleetwith Pike and Hay Stacks at the head of the Buttermere Valley.
