With a late start today a local walk was inevitable, so with the remains of yesterdays thunderstorms still rumbling somewhere in the distance, under grey skies I drove to Arnside, with a bag full of waterproofs a bottle of water, map and little else, I set off down the coast with the intention of returning over Arnside Knott, not being the appropriate word, with the sun burning through the cloud I aimlessly wandered covering more ground than I originally intended, sixteen miles and six hours later I found myself crossing the lower slopes of Arnside Knott too knackered to climb to the summit, desperately looking for a shortcut back to the car.

From Arnside I followed the coast south passing New Barns Bay, Blackstone Point, Park Point, Silverdale on route to Jenny Brown's Point, west from Jenny Brown's Point crossing Quaker's Stang to reach Crag Foot, a finger post at Crag Foot directed me to the Old Coach Road, through the woods of Grisedale following woodland and field paths I eventually reached the view point on Summer House Hill, down the hill through the park land of Leighton Hall to take the first path on the right, through fields to enter Cringlebarrow Wood, on leaving the woods more field walking through Thrang Moss, exiting Thrang Moss saw tarmac under foot as I strolled passed Brackenthwaite Farm searching for the path that lead to Hawes Water, through the fields and woods of Gait Barrows passing Hawes Water to reach Eaves Wood, on leaving Eaves Wood I crossed the limestone pavements in Middlebarrow Wood to emerge at Arnside Tower, the only obstacle left being Arnside Knott, I desperately searched for the easiest route back, I opted to follow the bridleway through Arnside Knott Wood then make my descent through Copridding Wood to New Barns followed by level walking back to Arnside.

A word of warning, the first half of this walk followed the Arnside, Silverdale shore, under some quite spectacular limestone cliffs passing some wonderful picturesque coves, it is not possible to follow the same route at any time other than extreme low water, alternative paths should be sought above the cliffs, there are plenty of them and the views across the bay are just as good, if not better.

A Circuit from Arnside including Silverdale, Yealand and Witherslack.
