These remains are the site of the Trowbarrow Limeworks.

Why is this site so important?

This is the birthplace of Tarmacadam, the road covering we travel along today and would struggle to live without.

   

Around 1896 it was discovered that mixing hot graded limestone chippings with hot tar then laying it on a sub base while still hot provides a durable elastic surface, in early days it was laid in places like Blackpool Promenade and Edinburgh City centre.
